While it makes for a good sound byte… God is NOT “calling America to repentance.”

While God did/does have a nation that He calls “His people,” America is not that nation. America is not even reminiscent of Israel. Yes, people who were trying to live their faith and follow God moved to this land centuries ago so that they could practice said worship without threat of stoning or stake burning or hanging or drowning; but that is a far cry from how Israel began.

And the only nation God ever called to repentance was Israel.

America is a WONDERFUL country. Don’t get me wrong. I am as patriotic–fancy myself MORE–than the next guy. I love my flag. I pledge “under God” and sing our anthem with as much gusto as any who butcher it at ball-games. I have relatives and friends in the armed services. They have fought overseas. They have had to keep it a secret where they went.

But I have a problem with treating America as a nation… the same as Israel as a nation. While there are some principles of the OT that are applicable to all men throughout all time {God blesses those who bless Israel, God is a refuge to those who trust Him, God does chastise His children, etc.} that is not grounds for saying that Israel’s promises from God are reserved for all saved today… or for “Christian nations”… which we were, at one time.

God calls people to Himself.

He calls sinners to repentance. Sinners are people-not nations. {Luke 5:32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.}

Nor does He wish for any man {person} to be unrepentant. {2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.}

So… while this little “byte” seems to hurt at first… because America HAS fallen away from her root of Christianity… it really is just barking really loudly-trying to cover up the fact that individuals need repentance-not “America.”

Because if individuals need repentance, then it becomes our responsibility as individuals to share the Gospel… you know, with individual people… like the lady in walmart who keeps staring at your kids or the woman behind the counter at your bank.

But if “America” needs repentance, then it’s OK just to invite people to church and be good and all that. Let preachers do their jobs! {:/}

[Last time I checked, the “great-commission” was for believers… Yes, believers make up the church, so we can and OUGHT to work together… have an organization to our methods. But that does not preclude us from telling people, individuals, around us, when the opportunity presents itself or the Spirit prompts us!]
